Fox Education Materials
Even if a wild mother can smell human scent on or around one of her young, they will not care. Wild mothers are great mothers and will go above and beyond to see that their young grow up well. This is why most baby mammals that have been separated from their mother can be reunited by rehabilitation teams.
Red foxes are very adaptable members of the Canidae family and this adaptability, coupled with the fact that they’re omnivores, means foxes live and den in both rural and urban settings. Red foxes are great mothers and often times den under sheds, decks, and porches that have been left open to them. If need be, foxes and their kits can be easily and humanely evicted from these spaces using radios, ammonia soaked rags, or flood lamps, but then efforts should be taken to seal up the entrance to prevent future denning after the current family moves out. To be absolutely certain that a den is abandoned and ready to be sealed, place a ring of baby powder around the entire entrance that is 12-16 inches thick. Watch for 48 hours and if no footprints or drag marks appear in the powder going in or out of the den it is ready to be sealed. Make sure to check for multiple entrances and place rings around each of them.
Foxes are one of many species that provide neighborhoods with free pest control services. This is because foxes love to eat rabbits, rats, mice, and insects.
